January 2024

Kia ora,

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you had a good festive season and are looking forward to the year ahead.

I really enjoyed connecting with many of you at the village Christmas gatherings and noticed how everyone was enjoying the new, super-sized Haumaru BBQ.

Some of you may already know that we’re currently in the Decade of Healthy Ageing. This is a United Nations’ initiative that encourages all parts of the system (including governments, businesses and the community and voluntary sector) to join together to contribute to ten years of concerted action to improve the lives of older people, their families and their communities. The intention is to work together to promote healthy ageing – which doesn’t just refer to looking after physical health, but also includes having a place to call home and people to connect with. At the next Haumaru tenant advisory group at the end of January, we’ll discuss healthy ageing as an agenda topic and the ideas that tenants might wish to adopt.

Enjoy the sunshine at this wonderful time of year.

Ngā mihi,

Gillian Schweizer,

Chief Executive Officer

Get to know 19 Karaka Village

19 Karaka Street Village in New Lynn is a smaller village with just 14 units. It’s a sunny spot where many of the tenants enjoy gardening, which you can tell immediately by the colourful frontage of the units and the thriving vegetable gardens. Everyone’s looking forward to the new indoor communal room, which is soon to be completed. With tea/coffee-making facilities, a library and tables and chairs, it will offer an inviting space for villagers to gather and connect with their friends and neighbours. Our photo shows the tenants and their guests from nearby 10 Karaka Street Village, who enjoyed a delicious shared lunch together to celebrate the Christmas season.

Spotlight on…new Facilities Maintenance Coordinator, Natalia Ha

Welcome to our new Facilities team member Natalia Ha who’s recently joined us. Natalia's previously held roles with transport, utilities and facilities provider Downer Group and with Kainga Ora. Originally from Russia, she's a professional musician by trade and plays the viola, violin and piano. In her home country, Natalia taught music and also conducted a chamber orchestra and performed with a philharmonic orchestra. In her new position, she’s very much looking forward to fostering connections with our tenants and working together with colleagues to make a meaningful impact in our village communities. Do say ‘Hi’  to Natalia when you see her around.

Haumaru’s tenant support services showcased

Our Tenancy Quality Manager Maxine Stiling and Community Manager Nicky Bibby were recently invited to address delegates at a major conference on international migrant services, organised by the CNSST Foundation (formerly known as Chinese New Settlers Services Trust). At the event, which was attended by many leading migrant service providers, they spoke about Haumaru’s range of tenant support services and our wellbeing and Good Neighbour initiatives. Maxine and Nicky are pictured receiving a certificate of thanks from Peter Ng, Chief Executive of the Chinatown Service Centre in Los Angeles which was one of the conference’s overseas co-hosts.

Christmas parties round-up

Tenants of Manurewa’s Gallaher and Alfriston Courts didn’t let wet weather dampen their spirits – they enjoyed their combined get-together inside the Gallaher building

Glenfield’s Bentley Court tenants enjoyed their Christmas party in the garden.

An overcast day didn’t stop Birkdale Court tenants from partying.

Despite some windy weather, tenants of Takapuna’s Peggy Phillips Village enjoyed their festivities out-of-doors.

Shepherd’s Park tenants had a great Christmas outing playing bowls and feasting at the nearby Beach Haven bowling club.

Te Atatu’s Kaumatua Court even hosted Santa on his motorcycle!

Haumaru’s Roland, Linda and Sean tested out the new BBQ before taking it on the road for the Christmas parties.

Polite reminders

- Please would tenants not feed the birds, as their droppings can create a slip risk and other health and safety issues which may prove hazardous
to all.
- There have been a few instances recently where mail has been incorrectly delivered. Please would you be mindful when opening letters that the correct name is on the envelope before opening. If the letter has been delivered to your unit in error, it would be helpful if you would redirect it to the intended recipient within your village.
