Your health, safety and wellbeing remains our priority. We have put measures in place under the traffic light system (the COVID-19 Protection Framework) to help protect you and your whānau, and our staff and contractors, from COVID-19.
Our Health and Safety measures include wearing masks and physical distancing when in the villages. Our contractors and staff are now able to go into your home for maintenance purposes with your consent. Note that contractors are not required to wear masks when exterior water blasting in the village.
Carrying out maintenance work in your home
If you are COVID-19 positive, a close contact of someone who is COVID-19 positive or self-isolating, only essential repairs where a tenant’s immediate health could be affected can be completed (e.g.if there is no power, water or heating).

Minimising the COVID-19 risk in your village
As the risk of catching Omicron rises, we encourage everyone to continue to keep up physical distancing, mask wearing, scanning and hand sanitising when out and about. Follow all Government and public health advice to protect yourself and others (see COVID19.govt.nz for further information). Should you start to feel unwell, isolate immediately and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 about getting tested.
Being COVID-prepared: have a plan
Consider developing a plan on how to prepare in case you need to self-isolate in case of contracting COVID or as a close contact. For example, identify a ‘buddy’ who can drop off essential items if needed. Getting help if needing to self-isolate
The period of self-isolation for people who test positive for COVID-19 has now reduced from 14 to 10 days. The period of self-isolation for household contacts has also reduced to 10 days unless you test positive. The period of self-isolation for close contacts has gone down to 7 days.
Self-isolation means staying at home and taking common-sense precautions to avoid close contact with those you live with. If you find out you’ve got COVID or are a close contact, you’ll receive instructions and advice directly from a public health official that’s specific to your individual situation and your needs. You’ll be asked if you need any support or help. Many people will be able to look after themselves or have support from friends and whanau, but some may need things like food and groceries. The Ministry of Social Development is coordinating support and connecting people with the right service to help them - for further details, click here https://covid19.govt.nz/isolation-and-care/how-to-self-isolate/. Those with COVID-19 who are being cared for in the community can receive support over the phone or in person if unable to use on-line services. This will be led by local health and welfare providers. Of course, the Haumaru Housing team will also be on hand if you need any help or advice at all, and you can contact the Haumaru Service Desk at any time - 0800 430 101.
Making sure you get your booster shot
The vaccination interval for getting the booster has now reduced from four months to three. With Omicron now becoming established in the community, the most important thing anyone can do to protect themselves and their whanau is to get boosted as soon as possible. It’s the booster shot that makes a real difference against Omicron: it helps boost your immunity, lowers the chances of getting very sick and being hospitalised, and also helps slow the spread of the virus generally.
People who are immunocompromised and are eligible for a third primary dose of the vaccine can access a booster dose three months after receiving their third primary dose.

Provided we’re at least double vaccinated and don’t have any underlying conditions, experts say that the preparation that most of us can do for the possibility of catching COVID-19 is to have things to help us manage symptoms, minimise risk to others, and aid rest and recovery at home.

Auckland will move from Alert Level 3 step 2 to 'Red'. The new framework provides a guide to protecting one another, keeping our health system running well and businesses open.

As you will be aware, the Government has been encouraging everyone in New Zealand to become vaccinated against COVID-19, to reduce the risk of this highly infectious virus from spreading further and making more people ill. This is becoming particularly urgent now, as the nation moves away from an ‘elimination’ strategy and towards ‘living’ with the virus in the community. For this reason, as many of us as possible need to be vaccinated, for our own health and that of our loved ones. If you’ve not yet had the opportunity to get the vaccination, please consider prioritising this in the coming days in order to protect yourself and those you care about.
Vaccination will be just one (albeit critically important) aspect of our wider efforts to minimise the spread of the virus. Other effective precautions that serve to provide the maximum protection for staff and tenants include wearing a mask, scanning and keeping a record of visits and travel, social distancing and good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing.
Vaccinations have the power to change the way Aotearoa New Zealand manages the COVID-19 virus, and being vaccinated will open up more opportunities for us. The Government has launched the COVID-19 Protection Framework which will bring us a world where we’re freer to move and live with less disruption, and that offers the stability that everyone needs to be able to plan for the future.
The COVID-19 Protection Framework introduces a new three-level approach to managing COVID-19 in the community and keeping people safe: Red, Orange, Green (a traffic light system of restrictions). This is more flexible than the current Alert Level system and we’ll be able to move up levels, when needed, to control any outbreak. Once 90% of eligible New Zealanders in each District Health Board region are fully vaccinated with two doses, it’ll be safe to introduce this new Framework which doesn’t rely on complete lockdowns as the main measure to stop the virus spreading. (Auckland will be able to switch over earlier, however, once all three of our DHBs reach the 90% double vaccination target.)
In addition to vaccination, testing for COVID-19, contact tracing and isolation will continue to be key tools in minimising any spread of the virus. Localised lockdowns will still be an option if there’s a rapid growth in cases (and even wider lockdowns if necessary, similar to the measures in Alert Level 3 or 4).
When exactly we shift between levels will depend (amongst other things) on how many people have been vaccinated, the capacity of the health and disability system, testing and how widespread COVID-19 has been transmitted within the community, including its impact on key populations.
So, our future is in our hands – the sooner everyone’s vaccinated, the sooner we can all return to some normality and enjoy life again as we used to know it.
Red is when the virus is spreading in a way that means we need to take action to protect our most vulnerable and prevent too much pressure on our health system. So, while the hospitality sector is open with the use of vaccine certificates for customers, and retail is also open with the usual public health measures, gathering limits and physical distancing will also be required. Masks will also be required in the same way we use them now, and regional boundary restrictions may apply.
Auckland will move into Red as soon as all three of our DHBs hit the 90% vaccination target, while the rest of the country would be expected to move collectively to orange, once every DHB hits the 90% target.
Orange is when there’s increasing community transmission that’s putting pressure on our health system. There may be an increasing risk for at-risk people. Everything remains open and, for those venues that use vaccine certificates, all of the gathering limits currently in place for events, gatherings or hospitality can lift. Places that choose not to use vaccine certificates will either be closed or will have public health measures in place. Regional boundary restrictions will not apply.
Green is when there’s some COVID-19 in the community but at low levels. Fully vaccinated people can enjoy all events, hospitality and gatherings by showing a vaccine certificate. Where premises choose not to use vaccine certificates, they’ll face restrictions on numbers and spacing. Regional boundary restrictions will not apply.
The new system is designed to keep vaccinated people safe from those who haven’t had the vaccine.
At all levels, people who’ve been vaccinated will be able to access businesses, retail and public facilities. Fully vaccinated people will be able to enjoy all events, hospitality and gatherings by showing a vaccine certificate, so it’ll be important that everyone can prove that they’re ‘double jabbed’ (although you won’t need a vaccination certificate to access supermarkets, pharmacies, health services, food banks and petrol stations).
From the end of November, digital vaccination certificates will be available. These will include a QR code, which you can print or save to your phone. There’ll be options available for those who don’t have a smartphone or access to a computer. You may be required to show this as proof of vaccination in a range of public settings, as businesses, events, organisations, community and a range of sectors may legally choose to implement a vaccination entry requirement for customers. Places that choose not to use vaccine certificates will either be closed or will have restrictions in place.
There’ll be an exemption process for the small number of people who are unable to get a vaccination for medical reasons.

To enjoy the full life and freedom of travel and movement that everyone in New Zealand deserves, get vaccinated today. If you want to visit close proximity businesses like hairdressers or go into cafes, restaurants or to church services, for example – no matter the Alert Level or traffic light setting – you’ll need to be vaccinated.
If you’re already vaccinated, do your best to encourage your friends and family to get their vaccinations, so we can all enjoy life within the new system sooner.
The vaccine is our armour. It will help keep you and the people around you as safe as possible in a COVID world. If you’re vaccinated, you’re less likely to catch the virus and much less likely to end up in hospital if you do. It also helps protect everyone else.
If you’re not vaccinated, there’ll be everyday things that you’ll miss out on.
The more people who are vaccinated, the harder it is for COVID to spread through communities quickly and find our most vulnerable. COVID-19 seeks out those who are unvaccinated and is much more harmful to those who are unimmunised. That’s why everyone needs to be vaccinated to save lives.

You will no doubt be aware that Auckland has now moved from COVID-19 Alert Level 4 down to Level 3. It is welcome news that we are heading in the right direction, and we want to thank you, your whānau, and all our staff for helping to make this possible. Community transmission may still be happening, however, so we need to remain vigilant and keep up all the recommended safety precautions. That way, we can help you live independently as a Haumaru tenant.

The Government advises everyone to stay home in their bubbles and to keep their travel to an absolute minimum. At Alert Level 3, you must keep your household bubble as small as possible. Only make physical contact with those in your bubble. If you need to, you can expand it to bring in close family, isolated people or caregivers. Otherwise, you cannot invite friends, whanau, neighbours or others who are not in your bubble into your home.
If you do need to leave your unit, please remember all the key safety precautions: wear a mask, scan wherever you go (or sign the register at the venue you are visiting), maintain a physical distance of two metres from others, wash your hands on your return, etc.
There are a few exceptions for essential workers and others, and for their children to return to school where it is necessary. This may mean that New Zealanders, including tenants’ family and friends, may be moving about more than before. Therefore, it is vital that you continue to be vigilant at all times.
As the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 is likely to be around for a very long time, it’s vital that older people are vaccinated. The Prime Minister said earlier this week that everyone over the age of 65 in Auckland should stay at home until they have been vaccinated. Getting vaccinated is a matter of personal choice, of course. However, if we want to protect other vulnerable adults and children and enjoy the freedom of movement and travel, etc, that we used to have, it is essential that as many people as possible are vaccinated.
It is understandable if you have questions about the vaccine, as there is a lot of fake information, scams and conspiracy theories circulating in communities. If you have any questions at all, speak to a trusted source such as your doctor or pharmacist or ring Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or visit the website COVID19.govt.nz.
As mentioned above, the Level 3 guidelines allow people to expand their bubbles if they need to, to reconnect with close family/ whānau, or bring in caregivers or support isolated people. Bubbles should remain exclusive which means sticking to the same people in your bubble. The guidelines also say that older people and those with existing medical conditions are at higher risk and should take additional precautions, which we take to mean making sure you can continue to be safe in your bubble and keeping it as small as possible.
As the outbreak in Auckland is not fully contained, there is still a risk of community transmission. Therefore, it is important that residents remain extremely vigilant in observing the need for mask wearing, physical distancing and hand sanitising when out and about. When you get home, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water. Remember to cough or sneeze into your elbow not your hand, or into a tissue that you throw away. To help with tracing anyone who may come into contact with COVID-19, keep a record or diary of your movements – either by using the NZ COVID Tracer App on your phone (with Bluetooth turned on) or in writing.
During Level 4, our staff have been regularly checking in with all tenants by phone and with regular drive-throughs of the villages. Our tradespeople have come in for urgent jobs, such as fixing hot water heaters or broken windows. Anyone entering a home has worn personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, practised sneeze and cough hygiene, followed the two-metre physical distance rule, and thoroughly washed their hands. That will continue. If you have an urgent problem, call us and we will get it fixed on a priority basis, by workers following all health and safety procedures
You will not have seen routine, non-urgent maintenance such as lawn mowing or gardening taking place. We plan to hold off on that, along other general maintenance, for another few weeks. Then we will resume work on routine maintenance if it is safe to do so and under strict COVID-19 health and safety procedures. Again, this extra precaution is to limit contact and make sure people stay safe within our villages.
We are currently not accepting new tenants into our villages and are discouraging anyone from leaving right now. Unless there is an urgent need, we would like to minimise tenants’ movement in or out of our villages until Level 2. We are happy to discuss if you have questions.

The key points of the Level 4 recommendations are outlined below.
The Government advises us all to stay home in our bubbles and stay safe. We need to keep up our two-metre physical distancing if we are outside our homes. This is the advice for everyone.
The Level 4 guidelines allow people to have a small bubble with close family/whānau, or bring in caregivers or support people who are isolated. Bubbles should remain exclusive, which means sticking to the same people in your personal bubble and not entering other people’s bubbles. The guidelines also say that older people and people with existing medical conditions are at higher risk and should therefore take additional precautions, which we understand to mean making sure you can stay safe in your bubble and keeping it as small as possible.
In those villages where there are communal laundries, we have put up signs advising that there should only be one person in the laundry at any one time, and that the surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected after use. Laundries are only to be used by the tenants of the village.
All Community halls are closed until further notice.
All trips and village gatherings or events are cancelled until further notice.
Our tradespeople will only respond to urgent jobs, such as fixing hot water cylinders or broken windows. Anyone entering a home will wear personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, practice sneeze and cough hygiene, follow the two-metre physical distance rule, and wash their hands thoroughly. If you have an urgent problem, please call us and we will get it fixed on a priority basis, by workers who will take all of the above precautions.
During Level 4 at this stage, non-urgent maintenance such as lawn mowing or gardening has been put on hold.
We are currently not accepting new tenants into our villages and are suggesting that people postpone any decision to move out now. We are happy to discuss this, if anyone would like further clarification.

It’s very welcome news that the Government has confirmed that people over 65 will start getting vaccinated from May under the new vaccine roll-out plan. However, until then, if you feel unwell at all, please stay home; if you develop cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 to get advice about being tested. If you're waiting for COVID-19 test results, and have been told you need to self-isolate, you legally must do so immediately.

The government has mandated that a mask or face covering is required on public transport but it may also be wise to wear a mask when out and about and social distancing is difficult e.g. at the supermarket.

Under Level 3 our tradespeople have come in for urgent jobs, such as fixing hot water heaters or broken windows. Anyone entering a home has worn personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, and has been practising sneeze and cough hygiene, following the two-metre physical distance rule, and thoroughly hand washing. This will continue. If you have an urgent problem, please call us and we’ll get it fixed on a priority basis by workers who will take all of the above precautions.
Regular non-urgent external maintenance such as lawn mowing or gardening will take place under Level 2. We will resume work on routine maintenance where it is safe to do so. Again, we are taking all precautions to limit contact and make sure people stay safe.
We’re currently accepting new tenants into our villages as there is a great need for housing. We have provided guidance as people have moved in and out of the village to ensure the health and safety of all tenants is managed in a safe manner.

You will no doubt have heard the Prime Minister’s announcement that Auckland is moving to COVID-19 Alert Level 3 for a period of three days from midday on Wednesday, 12 August 2020. We want to thank you, your family/whānau and all our Haumaru staff for following the government guidance.
We plan to keep doing what we are doing currently – putting the health and safety of tenants first and following national COVID-19 response recommendations from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
We aim to follow the Level 3 guidelines carefully and cautiously. We encourage everyone to keep up appropriate physical distancing so everyone – tenants, family/whānau and staff - remains safe, especially the most vulnerable in our communities. The key points of the Level 3 recommendations are outlined below; we will update you as more information comes to us.
The Government advises us all to stay home in our bubbles and stay safe. We need to keep up our two-metre physical distancing if we are outside our homes. This is the advice for everyone, although there are exceptions for people who can remain safely distanced from other people in their workplaces and whose children can return to school where it is necessary.
The Level 3 guidelines allow people to have a small bubble with close family/whānau, or bring in caregivers or support people who are isolated. Bubbles should remain exclusive, which means sticking to the same people in your personal bubble and not entering other people’s bubbles. The guidelines also say that older people and people with existing medical conditions are at higher risk and should therefore take additional precautions, which we understand to mean making sure you can stay safe in your bubble and keeping it as small as possible.
In those villages where there are communal laundries, we have put up signs advising that there should only be one person in the laundry at any one time, and that the surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected after use. We have also placed hand soap and paper towels in the laundries, so please make sure you are following handwashing guidance. Laundries are only to be used by the tenants of the village.
Our tradespeople will only be responding to urgent jobs, such as fixing hot water cylinders or broken windows. Anyone entering a home will wear personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, and has been practising sneeze and cough hygiene, following the two-metre physical distance rule, and thoroughly hand washing. This will continue. If you have an urgent problem, please call us and we will get it fixed on a priority basis, by workers who will take all of the above precautions.
During Level 3 at this stage, non-urgent maintenance such as lawn mowing or gardening has been put on hold until we hear more from the prime minister. Again, this extra precaution is to limit contact and make sure people stay safe.

You will no doubt have heard the Prime Minister’s announcement that New Zealand is moving from the COVID-19 Level 4 alert down to Level 3. It’s welcome news that, as a country, we’re heading in the right direction, but community transmission may still be happening so we need to remain vigilant. We want to thank you, your whānau and all our Haumaru staff for doing their part to make this possible. We all need to keep up the good work. That way, we can help you to continue to live independently in your home.
The short answer is that it will look pretty much the same as it is now. We plan to keep doing what we’re doing currently – putting the health and safety of tenants first and following national COVID-19 response recommendations from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

We encourage everyone to keep up appropriate physical distancing so everyone – tenants, whānau and staff - remains safe, especially the most vulnerable in our communities. More guidance may be coming from the government about what an expanded bubble looks like, and how and when you can expand your bubble to bring in close family or caregivers. We’ll update you on this as further information becomes available.

Update 25 March 2020
We have received notification from the government that Haumaru Housing, as a Community Housing Provider, is classified as a provider of essential services.
As advised in our earlier update this means we can continue to provide services which are considered “essential”. In the case of tenancy and maintenance services, this is where repair is needed immediately to maintain human health and safety.
We had hoped to deliver food and collect prescriptions for our tenants but due to the increase in alert level status and now with a state of national emergency declared we are only able to do this in an extreme emergency. This is to try and limit contact between people to limit the spread of this virus.
We have been phoning tenants to identify which tenants have a support network around them to assist with supermarket and pharmacy shopping. We know that for most communities, neighbours, family and friends are looking out for one another.
However, for tenants identified with no support or transport we will look at how we are able to support them on an emergency case-by-case basis.
We would like to remind all tenants that both Countdown and New World are able to deliver groceries to their door via online shopping. Talk to friends or family to help set this up. Pharmacies remain open also, so please contact your local pharmacy to determine how best to receive your medication.

Further to our previous correspondence regarding the proactive measures we are taking to reduce the risk of potential exposure for our tenants to COVID-19 /Coronavirus, we would like to reassure you that we remain committed to your safety and wellbeing and that of all our Haumaru Housing staff and village communities.
On Saturday 21 March the Prime Minster advised that high risk people should remain at home. This includes people over 70 or those with other existing medical conditions.
What we are asking Haumaru Housing tenants to do
Good neighbour leaflets and booklets
We know many of you are already good neighbours and to support this we have printed “Helping your neighbour” leaflets for you to complete and give to neighbours who may be unwell or self-isolating. This forms part of our good neighbour programme with booklets containing more ideas being delivered to you later this week.
Collection of your supermarket order and/or medical supplies from the pharmacy
If you are self-isolating at home and your family and friends are unable to help we may be able to arrange to have your essential items collected for you. All goods will need to have been ordered and already paid for by you. Our staff and volunteers will act as a caring courier service to collect and deliver pre-paid items to you. This Haumaru Housing service is free.
Staff and our volunteers follow public health guidance, washing hands frequently and will leave items at your door. They will also carry Haumaru ID and will be in uniform.

The most important thing is for you to keep an eye on each other and seek support from family, friends and neighbours if need be. Further to our letter to tenants of 3 March regarding the protective measures we are taking to reduce the risk of potential exposure for our tenants to COVID-19 /Coronavirus, we would like to reassure you that we remain committed to your safety and wellbeing and that of all our Haumaru Housing staff and village communities.
Although there is currently no known community transmission, we are working to reduce the risk of anyone contracting the virus, while enabling you to live independently in our villages. We are taking all possible precautions to safeguard your health and are also looking after our staff, so they can continue looking after you and our other Haumaru Housing tenants.
We are keeping an eye on the changing situation and, since January, have been following Ministry of Health and Government advice and implementing their guidelines. It is important that we all heed reliable, expert advice and look after each other. Some of our actions to maintain the wellbeing of tenants and staff include:
Reducing the risk
We hope you have seen the posters and other communications we have provided around the village. COVID-19 spreads from person to person, through droplets containing the virus. Thorough handwashing with soap or using hand sanitizers is known to kill viruses including COVID-19. We have increased our guidance to tenants and staff about handwashing, sneezing and coughing into tissues, and social distancing – avoiding handshakes, hongis, hugs, staying 2 metres apart, and avoiding social and sporting events for now. We are postponing tenancy checks, social events, van outings and group exercise, closing community halls and taking other measures to reduce the risk, particularly to our more vulnerable tenants. If you use shared laundries, you will see our posters advising you to only have one tenant using the laundry at one time, and cleaning the surfaces with disinfectant before and after use. This keeps everyone safe.
All our staff have access to hand sanitiser dispensers and disposable tissues. We encourage you to ask your visitors to follow good hygiene practices and to postpone visits if they are feeling unwell, have been in contact with unwell people, or have been overseas or in contact with anyone who may have had the virus.
Keeping in touch
It's up to all of us to check on each other. We have a range of measures in place to keep neighbours in touch with one another, including contact forms offering help to people who are self-isolating or ill. We have developed virtual community hubs where we can make regular phone calls to tenants, and are using village letter boxes so you can pop forms back to us or leave us notes. We are also exploring remote shopping and connection devices, so you can keep in touch or if you would like us to pick up your groceries or prescriptions. We will send out more detailed information on this over the coming days. The most important thing is for you to keep an eye on each other and seek support from family, friends and neighbours if need be. We are also available and can always be contacted on our 24/7 0800 helpline. We are working together for the physical and mental wellbeing of all, and looking out for our tenants and village communities.
Self-isolation
If you are ill, have been in close contact with someone who is ill or have recently been overseas, it is important you take effective steps to avoid close contact with other people, and you shouldn’t share dishes or bed linen with others, for example.
Maintenance
We are currently focusing on urgent repairs in tenants’ units (e.g. electrical repairs, blocked toilets, etc) and essential maintenance of external buildings, grounds and vacant units. Our contractors are compliant with public heath guidelines and are aware of the needs of our tenants. Putting non urgent internal maintenance on hold might cause some disruption, but we must focus on people’s health and wellbeing.

Symptoms include a cough, fever, shortness of breath — which could also indicate flu. For further information on COVID-19, please look out for the posters in the village, contact your GP or call the dedicated government Health line 0800 358 5453. There is also a COVID-19 website you can check for symptoms and information on self-isolation.

We’ve also put posters up in the villages with information and the Healthline details. Please also tell us if you are unwell, so we can provide support in addition to your family/whanau or friends.
With the ‘flu season’ looming, getting a vaccination is something that should also be considered. The Ministry for Health advises that having the flu jab will not prevent you from becoming infected with COVID-19, but it may reduce the effects and also reduce the effects of the standard flu, should you contract it.
The health and wellbeing of our tenants are of the utmost importance to us and we are committed to ensuring a safe environment for all those in our villages. We will continue to monitor the situation and review our practices and advice to tenants as necessary.
